Setting a Healthy Morning Routine

Every day is an opportunity to reset, try again, and grow. Whether you are, or are not, a “morning person”, a good morning routine can help you welcome the morning (or accept it, even if you hate it) and set you on a good path for the day – regardless of the time you wake up!

Here are a few tips to face the day with some acceptance and maybe one day, some enthusiasm. Whatever you decide for your routine, aim to develop some healthy habits – starting with 1 is amazing!

1. Keep technology out of the bedroom or off while you sleep

Believe it or not, a good morning routine, starts at night! Stop scrolling an hour or so before bed so you give your brain and eyes some time off.

We know it’s old school but consider investing in a cheap alarm clock instead of your phone. Choose an alarm sound that gently wakes you instead of jolting you out of sleep.

2. Give thanks and drink water

Water is life. When we wake up, our go to may be that caffeine, but to help replenish your body after sleep, go to H2O instead.

Give thanks to the water, wash your face, and drink up!

3. Smudge

Smudging is a great way to start the day! Light a smudge, pray for yourself, your loved ones and Mother Earth.

To learn more about smudging and medicines, ask an Elder or Knowledge Keeper in your community, or check out BearPaw Media and Education’s Wellness Guide for Indigenous Families

4. Journal or meditate

A quick gratitude list (5 things I’m grateful for) or a 5-minute meditation or breathing exercise can help clear your mind, collect your thoughts and set a good intention for the day!

5. Add your own piece to your morning routine!

You get to decide what works best for you in the mornings. Here are some other ideas for you to create our own morning routine:

  • Call a friend or loved one
  • Make a to-do list
  • Do something you enjoy
  • Move your body
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Make your bed
  • Listen to music
  • Be creative
