NIHB stands for Non-Insured Health Benefits. This is for anyone registered as a Status Indian under the Indian Act or an Inuk recognized by an Inuit land claim. This program ensures that any medically necessary health needs are covered. Such as listed below:

  • vision care
  • dental care
  • mental health counselling
  • medical supplies and equipment
  • prescription drugs and select over-the-counter products
  • medical transportation to access medically required health services not available:
  1. on reserve

  2. in the community of residence

Depending on where you go for medical-related questions, concerns, or needs; you will need to have your Status Card or know your Registered Indian Status Number.

Did you know if you live farther from any future set appointments, that you are entitled to hotel and accommodation? This is subject to how far and where the appointment is and if the appointment has been referred to by a doctor and then approved by NIHB. Contact 1-800-232-7301 for further information about NIHB.
