What is it? Nîkânîw is an Indigenous program for youth from ages 14-22.

That teaches you to:

  • Learn aquatic Leadership skills
  • Learn Life Skills
  • Understand and learn cultural teachings with Elders and Leaders

Where is this program? This program is available in person at Mill Woods Recreation Centre OR. Clareview Community Recreation Centre, located in Edmonton, Alberta.

When is this program?

The program runs as follows:

Mill Woods Recreation Centre:

  • Tuesdays from 5:00pm – 8:30pm
  • Thursdays from 5:00pm – 6:30pm

Clareview Community Recreation Centre:

  • Mondays from 5:00pm – 8:30pm
  • Wednesdays from 5:00pm – 6:30pm

How do I apply for this? To apply, you must go to the website and fill out their application. Where you will then be interviewed with a Nîkânîw programmer

Why should I apply? This program covers water safety education, first aid, CPR, and leadership skills. These areas work together to foster respect for Mother Earth, with a particular emphasis on the element of water.

You will also receive:

  • A City of Edmonton Leisure Centre facility pass for the duration of enrolment
  • Program supplies and materials
  • A meal on the first session of each week
  • Aquatic leadership courses provided by the City of Edmonton
