How to create a study schedule

Let’s face it, school is challenging! Getting there, staying awake, and THEN you have to do schoolwork at home too. How dare they! Add late nights, stressful assignments, and multiple deadlines – it can be overwhelming, to say the least!

Whether you are in high school, upgrading, or attending a technical school, university, or college, developing your own study schedule can really help you be successful.

Your own definition of success

Being successful doesn’t mean you have to be the smartest; it means that you get your work done and do your best! Getting organized can help you be successful! In the words of the wise, Yoda (you know Yoda, right?!), “Do or do not. There is no try.”

Here are some starting strategies to help you make school, work for you!

1. Get to know your study habits and learning style

Think about…

  • What time of the day are you most productive and able to focus?
  • Where do you study best? Desk in your room? A café? Do you need silence? Do you like to listen to music while you work? Can you study with friends? Do you need to be alone?
  • Can you study for long periods or short periods at a time? When do you need to take breaks?

Not sure about your learning style, take this quick online quiz!

2. For each class, create a personal learning goal

Usually, instructors tell you what the course goals are. The good news is you can also create your own!
Write a personal learning goal at the beginning of each class/course and then keep referring to it as you move along to make sure you reach it!

Answer the following questions for yourself:

  • What do I want to learn in this course?
  • What am I willing to do to achieve my goal?
  • What support do I need from my instructor or peers to reach my goal?
  • How and when will I ask for support?

3. Map out your study goals for each week

In each class, the instructor gives you a schedule for the topics and readings covered each week, when assignments are due and when tests happen.

To make sure you stay on top of all the reading, assignment writing, and studying for tests, create your own schedule that combines all the required work.
